Leek Flower with Bee

In recent years, I wanted to raise bees to increase the pollination in my garden beds and for the production of honey. However, my husband is allergic and despite a lifetime of gardening, I’ve never been stung. For all I know… I could be allergic, too!

I’ve really noticed noticed the dwindling numbers of bees. Whether it is due to Colony Collapse Disorder or something else, I don’t know. I rarely see a honey bee anymore. We still get a few bumble bees. They are my favorites, since they don’t really bother anyone and go diligently about their work. The majority of the pollination efforts must come from other types of insects like wasps and yellowjackets. I’ve always endeavored to plant a lot of flowers to attract bees, but it seems that there are fewer and fewer around to attract.

This article caught my eye today and may explain why: Scientists Discover What’s Killing the Bees
